The first official patent attesting to the invention of the e-cigarette was filed in 2003 by the Chinese inventor Hon Lik. British tobacco manufacturer Imperial Tobacco purchased the patent in 2013 through its subsidiary Fontem Ventures.
Other models produced by totally independent manufacturers have appeared on the market since that time.
